has just gotten worse. today, for example, romney gave a speech trying to sell himself as incredible commander in chief but his list of missteps is unprecedented. his disstrous british trip. he was labeled "mitt the twit," calling the operation that led to gadhafi's death a mission trip and never mind the cold war is over. maybe we wouldn't -- shouldn't be surprised that his foreign policy agenda is a mess. his team includes over a dozen former advisers to president bush. in fact, bush's defense secretary, donald rumsfeld, called romney's speef, terrific, comprehensive speech. our latest poll shows that america's people don't buy romney as commander in chief. he trails the president on that 47 to 39%. and he trails the president by 6% on foreign policy. for decades, republicans have had the edge over democrats when it comes to national security but thanks to this president's strength and romney's weakness, that trend is over. joining me now is richard wolffe, vice president and executive editor of and an msnbc political analyst and brian, a senior fellow at the american for

. but the real debate last night was between mitt romney and mitt romney. and being so contradictory, mr. romney opened a huge line of attack for the president. not just for 90 minutes, but for the 33 days until this election. and today in a blistering speech, the president took full advantage of the opportunity that romney's dishonest performance invited. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney. because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy, the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. the real mitt romney said we don't need any more teachers in our classrooms. but don't boo, vote. but the fellow on stage last night, he loves teachers. can't get enough of them. the mitt romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries. but the guy on stage last night, he said that he doesn't even know that there are such laws that encourage outso

't hear an explanation? >> i guess you would say that romney spent 42 months appealing to conservatives and now he wants to spend the last months appealing to moderates and obviously he's got to change that speech. arguably the economy was in the dumps for a long time and so this is just going to force him in other directions again. >> well, joan walsh and e.j., thanks for your time tonight. both of you have a great weekend. >> and you, too, sir. >>> coming up, as e.j. just said, he takes it all back. mitt romney says he's completely wrong about calling the 47% of this country victims and moochers. is he serious? >>> and this is what it looks like for mr. romney. big bird is crashing the party and president obama continues to call the romney team out. >> now, my opponent, he's doing a lot of little -- a little tap dance at the debate the other night, trying to writiiggle out stuff he's been saying for a year. it was like dancing with the stars. >> all that plus, breaking news out of ohio tonight. a win for democracy. stay with us. you're watching "politicsnation" on msnbc. >> before the

in tomorrow's speech -- in tomorrow's debate, i should say, and speeches throughout the next 35 days from -- >> absolutely. >> -- both the president and vice president? >> absolutely. and they should. as your other guest said, this was a window into governor romney's basic core of beliefs, into his political soul. same thing with paul ryan. they can try to make it up and say, i'm going to care about all americans and i gave them all health care in massachusetts. but that's campaign rhetoric. the american people understand when they hear politicians talking on the campaign trial. but this was a window into their soul. and what was so shocking about governor romney was that he's totally wrong. that 47% is about 70 million americans. 42 million of them, rev, earn less than $19,000. they work, many of them two, three-part-time jobs. they make less than $19,000 in a desperate attempt to feed their family. you tell me someone with three jobs isn't willing to take personal responsibility, wants entitlements? they work like dogs and they're not making money. it's an insult to hard working america
